Last week, we begin our weather unit. We will focus on the measurable features of weather (temperature, cloud cover, wind, precipitation, humidity and air pressure.). We began learning about the three main cloud types. Take a look outside and ask your child to identify cirrus, stratus and cumulus clouds!
Ms. Bisson, our technology specialist, has been working with the fourth grade to complete an iMovie presentation to share with the students in Teosinte. Teosinte is our sister city in El Salvador. The students are showing the students in Teosinte about school life in Arlington!
We are continuing our work with two by one multiplication using the array model. We are also revisiting perimeter and area. Today the students completed an activity where they planned out a garden using the area and perimeter as guidelines.
On Friday, Officer Hogan visited to talk to the 4th graders about community safety and stranger danger. His visit fits nicely into our Great Body Shop Community Safety curriculum. Students asked lots of questions about K-9 Dasty (who wasn't with Officer Hogan.) Officer Hogan will come in once more to talk about stranger danger and the internet.
Today grades 3-5 attended an Eversource assembly where they learned how machines, buildings, cars, and electronics use energy and where the energy comes from. (They talked about water turbines, which tied in nicely with our Lowell Mills unit!) Through interactive skits, they explored ways to conserve energy.
Fourth graders are now working on a combined woven piece! On our Saori loom, students wind a bobbin, switch peddles, and beat the reed. Once the combined class piece is finished, students will create their own woven piece.
Today, fourth graders cycled through 4 math stations where they answered elapsed time, multiplication, money, and subtraction questions. We love our math stations -- and so do the kids! Students solved the problems, explained their thinking, checked their work, and earned some bling!
We are in the midst of a writing unit, Raising the Quality of Our Narrative Writing. Writers are choosing a topic and writing two leads. They will then begin work on a new narrative adding description, slowing down important moments and thinking about their word choice.
We began our work researching life at the Lowell Mills. We are looking at primary and secondary sources, statistics and photographs. Students are gathering information and will then create a mini-book full of information.
