We have started a unit on Greek Mythology. We are learning about life in Ancient Greece, reading different myths, writing summaries and learning about the different gods and goddesses!
For the next two weeks during our technology time with Ms. Bisson, students are making timelines based on Abraham Lincoln's life on the app Popplet. They are gathering facts from a text, putting the facts into their own words and typing them into the popples on their iPads!
We have been working hard to order fractions. We are comparing them to landmark numbers 0, 1/2 and 1. The students are writing expanations.
Today students learned how the Lakota recorded important events. After watching a short video on Winter Counts, they created their own Winter Count craft. Students used oil pastels, brown paper, and Lakota images and pictographs.
We are wrapping up our study of the midwest. We learned about the Great Lakes, Mt. Rushmore, the Plains and tornadoes. Though our study, we heard Langston Hughes read his poem about the Mississippi River, watched a video about the Plains Indians and analyzed how the Great Plains have changed over time by examining photographs.
We have been working hard in ELA on reading and responding to informational articles. We are examining text structure and annotating the text. In our written responses, we are focusing on adding text evidence to support our thinking.
This week we had centers in math. Students collected snowman as they cycled through each center. They focused on multiplication, perimeter and area, ordering fractions, and number sense.
We are beginning a unit on Abraham Lincoln. We will be reading texts about Lincoln, studying historical photographs and writing about Lincoln's life and accomplishments. This week we are creating a historical timeline and watching two videos, one on Abraham Lincoln's life and another on the Civil War to gain some background knowledge. After break, we will continue our unit and get in more depth about this man and this time in history.
Students dove deep into fractions. Over the past few days, students ordered fraction fish, decomposed fractions into unit fractions, showed their fraction thinking in addition problems as well as in multiplication problems, and found equivalent eel fractions.
