The fourth grade had a fun trip to the Lowell Mills today. The students experienced life in the mills by visiting a boarding house and walking through the weaving room, They participated in a town meeting by taking on a role that was either for or against the opening of a school for the Irish immigrant children. On top of all of that, they received a passport with the name and information of an immigrant. They had to "pass through" the immigration officer's station and answer questions about where they were coming from and why they were leaving their country. They also looked through the belongings of a person who immigrated to the United States from Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Cambodia or Colombia. It was a really fun day and the fourth graders learned a ton!
This is a cool opportunity! There is a White House youth initiative that allows all 4th graders and their families to get a free year pass to experience the National Parks of our country. FREE OF CHARGE! Go to the website below to find out more!
https://everykidinapark.gov/about/ This week in math, we are working on rounding numbers. Today we did a mixed up math activity with our fifth grade friends. Each set of partners were given a set of data about the weight of different elephants. They had to round the weight of each elephant to the nearest thousand and organize this data. Next week, they will take the data and create a line plot.
This week, we watched Mill Times, a PBS documentary on the Industrial Revolution and introduction of mills to the United States. In addition to the video, we are reading texts that explore the daily schedule of mill workers as well information about the people who came to work in the mills. We are excited for our visit this Monday to the Lowell Mills.
We are learning about the Northeast region of the United States. We have discussed the climate and will learn about the natural resources and physical features.
We are finishing up our first narrative writing pieces. We are following the Writing Workshop Process of drafting, revising, editing and final copies. Our fourth grade writers are adding description, slowing down moments and using strong verbs to make their pieces incredible!
Today we worked on adding three or more numbers together using the addition algorithm. Students worked in partners solving these problems. Here is an example of one:
Today we had two Arlington firemen who came in and discussed fire safety with the classes. They spoke with the students about a fire safety plan to have at home as well as what items can cause burns.
We have started reading groups this week. We are reading chapter books and thinking more deeply about the character development and author's purpose.
This week we are practicing the subtraction algorithm. We are also continuing our exploration of factors. We are solving a factor word problem about arranging 24 scarecrows on the Thompson Field. Here are a few factor games you can play on an iPad or computer.
